News: Assisted reproduction associated with elevated risk of birth defects
A study published last week in the journal Human Reproduction found an elevated risk of birth defects amongst babies conceived through assisted reproductive techniques, including IVF. The research, headed by Dr Jennita Reefhuis of the US Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, used data from the National Birth Defects Prevention Study to compare the health of babies born to women who had used the techniques with infants born to women who had conceived naturally.

Overweight women are at greater risk of miscarrying a genetically normal baby in the early stages of pregnancy than women who maintain a healthy weight, according to a new study by scientists at the Stanford University School of Medicine in California, US.

News: Slow-frozen embryos seem to produce healthier babies in IVF [Correction]
Three new independent studies have provided further evidence that embryos stored using slow-freezing techniques may be better than fresh for IVF. The studies were presented at the American Society for Reproductive Medicine conference in San Francisco, US, last week. The studies indicate that using frozen embryos rather than fresh embryos reduces the risk of stillbirth and premature delivery.

News: Fertility experts suggest reforms to overcome sperm shortage
Sperm donation services require infrastructural reorganisation, 'sperm-sharing' incentive schemes and regulatory reforms to overcome the severe shortage presently causing 'anguish' to thousands of infertile couples in the UK each year and to the health professionals unable to provide treatment to their patients, according to fertility experts writing in the British Medical Journal (BMJ).

A woman in Taiwan has used the frozen sperm of her cancer-survivor husband to conceive and give birth to healthy twins. The woman's husband, surnamed Chen, was diagnosed with testicular cancer whilst studying at university aged 23.

An international poll has shown a range of opinions about when human life begins biologically. It comes ahead of a proposed constitutional amendment in Colorado, US, which could confer legal rights to embryos at the point of fertilisation. The poll was commissioned by Reproductive Biology Associates, an IVF clinic in Atlanta, Georgia.

News: Victorian parliament approves equal access to IVF
New laws that grant lesbian couples and single women equal access to IVF have been passed by MPs voting in Victoria's Parliament. The Assisted Reproductive Treatment bill was approved by 47 votes to 34, in a three day debate that lasted in the early hours. It will now be debated in the Upper House before it can become law.

News: Fertility doctor wins libel costs and tops IVF league tables
New figures release last week by the UK's Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) show that two clinics run by fertility expert Mohammad Taranissi - the Assisted Reproduction and Gynaecology Centre (ARGC) and the Reproductive Genetics Institute (RGI) - are the most successful in the country in terms of 'live birth rates' (the number of babies born compared to the number of IVF cycles carried out).

News: Widow claims human right to use dead husband's sperm
The UK's High Court has ruled that it may have been unlawful for a widow to have removed her dead husband's sperm. Despite UK law requiring valid written consent for the storage and use of sperm, the 42-year-old widow obtained emergency Court permission to have sperm collected from her 31-year-old husband's body hours after he unexpectedly died from complications with a routine operation to remove his appendix in June 2007.

News: UK IVF births top 10,000
The number of women having successful in vitro fertilisation (IVF) treatment topped 10,000 for the first time in 2006, according to new figures released by the HFEA today. There were 10,242 births resulting in 12,596 babies in 2006, an increase of 13.1% on the number of births in 2005.

New laws to regulate assisted reproductive technology in India will be introduced to Parliament later this year. The text of the Assisted Reproductive Technology (Regulation) Bill 2008 was published last week by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) for public comment.
